Cambodia PM Vows to Make Country Hostile for Scammers

POLICY WIRE — Phnom Penh, Cambodia — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has vowed to intensify efforts against transnational online scam networks, declaring his intention to make the country inhospitable for such criminal activities. Speaking at a press conference, Manet highlighted the adaptive strategies of these criminal syndicates, which are fracturing into smaller, decentralized cells across the region to evade detection.

Authorities have already dismantled more than 670 illegal scam operations. Manet emphasized the importance of expanding intelligence sharing with key international law enforcement partners. This commitment was underscored during a recent visit by US Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel.

“We will make Cambodia not worth staying for scammers,” Manet stated. “Our collaboration with international partners is crucial in dismantling these networks and ensuring they cannot operate with impunity.”

The prime minister’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the proliferation of online scams, which have victimized thousands across the globe. The Cambodian government has been under pressure to address these issues, particularly as the country has become a hub for such criminal activities.

In response to these challenges, Cambodian authorities have increased their efforts to cooperate with international agencies. This includes sharing intelligence — and coordinating joint operations to target scam networks effectively.

The crackdown has seen significant results, with numerous arrests and the seizure of assets linked to these criminal enterprises. However, the fluid nature of these syndicates poses ongoing challenges for law enforcement.

Manet’s pledge to make Cambodia unviable for scammers reflects a broader regional effort to combat transnational crime. Neighboring countries, including Thailand and the Philippines, have also intensified their efforts to tackle similar issues.
