POLICY WIRE — Pretoria, South Africa — South Africa defeated Scotland 42-28 in a Nations Championship rugby match held in Pretoria, according to news reports. The Springboks, identified as double reigning world champions, secured a hard-fought victory against a Scottish side that challenged them throughout the contest.
Scotland, led by Gregor Townsend, had previously recorded wins against England, France, and Argentina earlier this year. Despite their strong performance, the team’s wait for a first-ever win in South Africa continues.
The match saw South Africa establish an early 14-0 lead. Scrum-half Embrose Papier scored the first try in the 17th minute, followed by Evan Roos, who finished a team try after Cobus Weise’s play. Scotland responded in the second quarter, with Matt Fagerson scoring a pick-and-go try in the 34th minute. Kyle Rowe added another try, with Finn Russell converting both, leveling the score by halftime. Reports indicate Scotland had not scored a try in their two previous matches against South Africa.
Early in the second half, South Africa’s Ben-Jason Dixon received a yellow card for head contact with Scotland’s Scott Cummings during a ruck. Scotland was unable to capitalize on the numerical advantage, with Ewan Ashman being held up on the try line. The yellow card was not upgraded following a bunker review, and Dixon returned to the field with the score remaining level.
Following Dixon’s return, South Africa scored three tries within a 10-minute period around the hour mark. Elrigh Louw, Damian Willemse, — and Zach Porthen each crossed the try line, extending the Springboks’ lead. Scotland mounted another comeback, with Josh Bayliss scoring in the 68th minute and Ben White adding another try two minutes later. These scores secured a four-try bonus point for Scotland — and narrowed the deficit.
As Scotland pressed for a potential game-tying converted try, Jesse Kriel scored a late breakaway try for South Africa in the 77th minute, ultimately sealing the 42-28 victory for the Springboks.
