POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — The long-awaited sequel to the 1998 cult classic Practical Magic has made a strong return to the box office, claiming the top spot in North America with a $30 million opening weekend.

The film, released nearly three decades after its predecessor, surpassed expectations as it took the number one position from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which had held the lead for six consecutive weeks. With an estimated $30 million grossed across 4,146 theaters, the Warner Bros film met the lower end of its projected earnings range.

Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters in a cursed witch family, the movie introduces a new generation of characters played by Joey King and Maisie Williams. Directed by Susanne Bier, the $75 million production marks a major return for the franchise, which originally earned $46 million at the box office before gaining a devoted following through home video and streaming platforms.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped to second place with $8.4 million, a 54% decrease from the previous week. The film now stands just $1.4 million short of the all-time domestic record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey remained in third with $7 million, bringing its total to over $600 million in North America.

Other films in the top 10 included Angel Studios’ Runner, which debuted fourth with $6.7 million, and Ketchup Entertainment’s Coyote vs. Acme, which reached $47.8 million in total domestic revenue. South Korean sci-fi thriller Hope also made an impact, earning $3.3 million in its opening week.
