POLICY WIRE — LONDON, UK — Linda Noskova, 21, has claimed her inaugural Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, dedicating her victory to her late mother, Ivana. Reports indicate that Ivana Noskova passed away on the eve of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, two years prior to her daughter’s triumph.
The Czech player secured the Venus Rosewater Dish by defeating compatriot Karolina Muchova in a three-set final on Centre Court. Noskova prevailed with a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, marking her first major championship win.
During the final match, Noskova held five championship points in the second set before Muchova forced a decider. Noskova subsequently regained her composure to win the final set, falling onto her back upon securing the victory, according to reports.
In her post-match remarks, Noskova acknowledged Muchova for her role in the all-Czech final. She extended gratitude to her family, friends, coaches, — and entire team. Noskova reserved her final expression of thanks for her late mother, who died following a prolonged battle with cancer shortly before the 2024 Championships. Noskova, then 19, was seeded 26th in that tournament but exited in the second round.
Addressing the crowd, Noskova stated, There’s one more person I’d like to thank which is my mum, I definitely would not be standing here without her, so thank you. She then looked skyward and blew a kiss, becoming visibly emotional. Noskova further commented on her emotional state, saying, “I don’t cry normally, this is not okay for me! I have been enjoying these two weeks so much, all the sad tears, all the happy tears, all the sweat and blood put into this, it was all worth it. I will definitely never forget these two weeks.”
Noskova is the youngest woman to win Wimbledon since Petra Kvitova, also a Czech player, achieved the feat in 2011. Kvitova observed the match from the Royal Box, alongside nine-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova, who was the first Czech player to win the title at the All England Club.
The path to the final included a critical moment in the third round, where Noskova saved a match point against No. 17 seed Sorana Cirstea. This achievement places her among an elite group of players; she’s only the third woman, following Venus Williams and Serena Williams, to win the Wimbledon title after saving a match point en route to the final.
Reflecting on her performance, Noskova remarked, It feels incredible, today but all these matches have been so physically and mentally tough. She also addressed her opponent directly, stating, Karo, you really made me work for it, I’ll forgive you this one. Like you said, we’re friends, I’m so glad I could play my first grand slam final with you. I think we made history today. I believe that all our Czech fans back home are proud of us, no matter the result. I want to congratulate your team, you especially, you have been such a fighter, good two weeks for you and a great season so congrats as well.
