POLICY WIRE — Chicago, USA — The Chicago Cubs’ minor league system experienced a week filled with significant player accolades, crucial promotions, and a thrilling late-game turnaround, especially highlighted by the South Bend Cubs’ dramatic 16-10 victory over the Dayton Dragons.
Minor League Player Spotlights and Movements
Several promising talents across the Cubs’ affiliates garnered notable recognition. Mason McGwire, a standout pitcher for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, was distinguished as the Minor League Pitcher of the Week, an honor encompassing all minor league divisions. Furthermore, catcher Owen Ayers claimed the Midwest League Player of the Week title, a recognition that coincided with his promotion to the Double-A Knoxville Smokies.
For the second consecutive week, Knoxville Smokies right-hander Grant Kipp continued his impressive form, once again being named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week. On the promotion front, corner infielder Cole Mathis advanced from the Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans to the High-A South Bend Cubs, while shortstop Geuri Lubo and right-handed pitchers Daniel Avitia and Connor Knox all earned promotions to South Bend from rookie ball in Mesa.
In other roster changes, catcher Miguel Useche was reassigned from Knoxville to South Bend, and third baseman Brian Kalmer was released from the South Bend Cubs organization. These movements underscore the dynamic nature of minor league development.
Affiliate Performance Rundown
Iowa Cubs Face Tough Outing
The Triple-A Iowa Cubs struggled against the Louisville Bats, suffering a 10-3 defeat. Starting pitcher Paul Campbell took the loss, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on nine hits over 4.2 innings, managing two strikeouts against one walk. The I-Cubs’ offensive production was limited, with all three runs originating from a three-run home run by left fielder Dylan Carlson in the fourth inning. Carlson finished 1-for-4, while third baseman BJ Murray contributed with a 3-for-4 performance including a double, and right fielder Chas McCormick went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Knoxville Smokies Shut Out
The Knoxville Smokies were blanked 4-0 by the Chattanooga Lookouts, with all four runs scoring in the second inning off starter Nick Dean. Dean allowed five hits and two walks while striking out three over three innings. Relief pitcher Dawson Netz provided solid support, tossing three scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and one walk, and striking out four. Offensively, designated hitter Andy Garriola was 2-for-4 with a double, and shortstop Karson Simas also went 2-for-4. Owen Ayers’ debut at Double-A was challenging, as he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout and was notably called for catcher’s interference twice.
South Bend Cubs Stage Epic Comeback
In a thrilling contest, the South Bend Cubs mounted an incredible comeback to overcome the Dayton Dragons with a 16-10 victory. Starter Kevin Valdez faced an early deficit, giving up five runs on eight hits in three innings. Despite trailing, South Bend rallied to take a 10-6 lead after a five-run eighth inning. However, the lead was short-lived as relief pitcher Nate Williams struggled to retire a batter in the bottom of the eighth, leading to Ethan Bell taking over. Bell allowed two inherited runners to score, tying the game at 10-10.
“The resolve shown by our South Bend team to battle back multiple times in that game was truly impressive. It highlights the determination of these young players.”
Undeterred, the South Bend Cubs exploded for six more runs in the top of the ninth, securing the win, with Bell ultimately earning the decision. Williams was charged with four runs (two earned) on three walks. Bell delivered two impressive innings of scoreless relief, yielding only one hit, striking out two, and walking one.
Offensively, shortstop Miguel Olivo blasted his first South Bend home run, a solo shot in the third inning. Olivo had an exceptional game, going 2-for-3 with two walks, scoring five times, and driving in two runs. Right fielder Kade Snell also had a strong outing, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBI. Third baseman Matt Halbach contributed with an RBI double and a two-run single in the ninth. Left fielder Reginald Preciado was 2-for-4 with two walks and two runs scored. In his South Bend debut, first baseman Cole Mathis made a significant impact, hitting a crucial three-run double in the eighth inning.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans Fall Short
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were defeated 6-2 by the Fayetteville Woodpeckers. Starter Dominick Reid absorbed the loss after allowing three runs on five hits over three innings, all occurring in the second. Reid issued two walks and recorded one strikeout. Right fielder Josiah Hartshorn collected two hits in five at-bats, including an RBI single in the seventh. First baseman Michael Carico went 1-for-4, was hit by a pitch, stole a base, and drove in a run with a single, also in the seventh inning.
