POLICY WIRE — Wrexham, United Kingdom — Defender Callum Doyle, a pivotal figure in Wrexham‘s quest for Championship play-off contention, has earned a coveted spot in the prestigious Championship Team of the Season.
The 22-year-old talent has made a significant impact this season, participating in 36 matches across all competitions, including an impressive run of 26 consecutive appearances. This recognition is a “massive honour,” according to Doyle, marking a remarkable personal achievement.
A Challenging Start and a Defining Moment
Despite his current success, Doyle openly admits that his tenure at the Stok Cae Ras did not begin smoothly. His early days with the club, following a late summer transfer, saw him struggle to find his footing.
A critical incident occurred in October during his eighth game for Wrexham, a home fixture against Oxford United. In the second half of a match that Wrexham ultimately won 1-0, Doyle received a straight red card for a sliding tackle on Oxford United‘s Siriki Dembele.
“It’s one of those moments that it’s a bad moment,” Doyle reflected. “But, in the grand scheme of things it’s not so bad of how I’ve changed my attitude towards training. And it’s been good for me since that point.”
This sending-off, initially a setback, proved to be a pivotal turning point in Doyle‘s season. It presented an unexpected opportunity for manager Phil Parkinson and his coaching staff to intensively work with the Manchester-born defender.
Parkinson explained that Doyle had missed a significant portion of pre-season training, requiring extra effort to bring him up to speed. The enforced absence after the red card allowed the team to provide him with what he described as a “mini pre-season,” focusing on his development. “Everybody can see what a class player Callum is,” Parkinson added, highlighting his experience despite his young age. Growth, Support, and Promotion Ambitions
Doyle expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support from Wrexham‘s staff and teammates during his challenging initial weeks. He joined the newly-promoted Championship club in mid-August, two league games into the new campaign.
“At the start, I did struggle,” Doyle confessed. “At the start it wasn’t the best and at the time I was a bit down. But since then I think I’ve improved a lot and I think everyone can see around the building that my mood’s changed.”
The former England Under-21 international credits his significant improvements to the close collaboration with Wrexham‘s dedicated coaching team. Their daily encouragement and structured training sessions have been instrumental in building his confidence and refining his abilities.
A product of the esteemed Manchester City academy, Doyle gained valuable experience through loan spells at clubs like Sunderland, Coventry, Leicester, and Norwich before his move to Wrexham last summer. He previously enjoyed promotion success with both Sunderland and Leicester, a feat he now passionately hopes to replicate with his current club.
With only three games remaining, Wrexham currently sits two points shy of the play-off positions. Their crucial schedule begins with an away fixture against Oxford United on Tuesday, a fitting encounter given Doyle‘s past experience with them. Securing promotion, Doyle emphasized, “is probably one of the best feelings in football.”

The intensity of Championship football is evident, and Wrexham remains focused on their performance. He urges the team to maintain their current momentum, commit their utmost effort, and continue striving for victory in these decisive matches. The strong backing from the fan base, particularly the traveling supporters, is anticipated to provide an additional boost.
