POLICY WIRE — London, England — Following Arsenal’s recent struggles, only one club in the Premier League has managed to avoid successive defeats this current season.
The Gunners’ challenging period continued with a significant 2-1 loss to title rivals Manchester City on Sunday. This defeat closely followed a 1-0 home loss against Bournemouth earlier in the month, underscoring the difficulties faced by manager Mikel Arteta’s squad in April.
Consequently, the distinction of being the sole Premier League team to sidestep back-to-back losses this campaign now belongs exclusively to Manchester United. Despite suffering seven league defeats overall so far, the Red Devils have consistently demonstrated an ability to recover, securing six victories and one draw immediately after each loss.
For example, their latest recovery saw them triumph over Chelsea following an earlier defeat to Leeds United. The last occasion United experienced consecutive league defeats was in May of the previous year, when they were beaten by West Ham United and Chelsea. This formed part of a three-game losing run, which also included a prior loss to Brentford.
Even their cross-town rivals, Manchester City, faced consecutive defeats as recently as August, with losses against Tottenham Hotspur at home and Brighton & Hove Albion away. This highlights the rarity of Manchester United’s current unbroken streak in bouncing back from adversity.
Lower League Resilience: Teams Avoiding Consecutive Losses
Beyond the top flight, a mere five other clubs across the top four tiers of English football have also maintained a perfect record of avoiding two straight league losses. No team in the Championship has achieved this feat this season, but several clubs in League One and League Two stand out:
- In League One, Bolton Wanderers and current leaders Lincoln City have yet to suffer two successive defeats.
- In League Two, three teams have similarly avoided consecutive setbacks: the already-promoted Bromley, along with Cambridge United and Chesterfield.
