Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has officially received the Third Country Operator (TCO) license from the United Kingdom, enabling the restart of direct flights starting October 2025. The airline will initially operate to Manchester, followed by Birmingham and London, carrying both passengers and cargo under a five-year ACC3 (Air Cargo Carrier 3) certification. This achievement is a major milestone for Pakistan, reflecting renewed international confidence in the country’s aviation standards and offering benefits across several areas, enhancing global connectivity, boosting trade, serving the 1.6 million-strong Pakistani diaspora in the UK, strengthening tourism, encouraging investment, and fostering competition. While challenges remain in fleet modernization, operational efficiency, and meeting international standards, the resumption of flights is more than a travel development; it is a symbol of Pakistan’s economic growth, modernization, and national pride.
The TCO license acquisition marks a turning point for PIA, allowing the airline to operate in the UK once more after a period of regulatory challenges. The license highlights the international aviation safety measures taken by Pakistan and signals renewed confidence in the airline’s operations. This comes as PIA actively modernizes its fleet, which currently includes 32 aircraft such as Airbus A320s, Boeing 777s, and ATR 42s, with 8 additional aircraft scheduled for delivery by year-end. The strengthened fleet enables PIA to meet the demands of these routes efficiently, demonstrating resilience despite past operational setbacks.
The initial rollout to Manchester, followed by Birmingham and London, will facilitate both passenger travel and cargo transport. The ACC3 certification ensures secure and compliant air cargo operations, crucial for seamless international trade. Direct cargo flights will accelerate the export of Pakistani products such as textiles, leather goods, IT equipment, and fresh produce, making them faster, more efficient, and globally competitive. With trade between Pakistan and the UK already reaching approximately £4.9 billion in the four quarters to Q1 2025, the enhanced cargo capacity will benefit exporters, strengthen trade infrastructure, and contribute to economic growth.
The diaspora will also benefit from more convenient travel, as direct flights eliminate lengthy layovers and reduce travel costs. Students, professionals, and families will be able to travel more efficiently for education, work, or family reunions, fostering stronger social, cultural, and business ties between Pakistan and the UK. Meanwhile, the enhanced connectivity encourages foreign direct investment, allowing international investors easier access to Pakistan and increasing confidence in sectors such as IT, manufacturing, and infrastructure.
PIA’s expansion into other international destinations, including Baku, Paris, and Middle Eastern cities like Bahrain, Dammam, Kuwait, Jeddah, and Doha, along with codeshare agreements with China Southern, Etihad Airways, Kenya Airways, Thai Airways, and Turkish Airlines, will further enhance global connectivity and economic engagement. Tourism is another key beneficiary. Easier access for UK and European visitors is expected to increase tourism revenue, promote cultural exchange, and showcase Pakistan’s heritage, natural beauty, and hospitality. These developments foster people-to-people connections, encourage commercial activity, and enhance mutual understanding between nations.
The resumption of PIA’s direct UK flights highlights Pakistan’s modernization by meeting international aviation standards and expanding its global connectivity. Obtaining the TCO license and ACC3 certification demonstrates upgraded operational capabilities and fleet efficiency, enabling faster passenger and cargo transport. This milestone also evokes national pride, as it reconnects the diaspora, strengthens economic and cultural ties, and positions Pakistan as a confident and capable player on the global stage.
In essence, the resumption of PIA flights is a landmark for Pakistan. It symbolizes economic opportunity, international respect, and sustainable development. By enhancing connectivity, supporting commerce, and serving citizens abroad, Pakistan solidifies its position as a globally connected nation ready to compete internationally.
