Drone Strike Halts Production at Iraq’s Khor Mor Gas Field, Triggers Regional Blackouts
Drone strike shuts Iraq's Khor Mor gas field, halting LPG output and cutting power across the northern Kurdistan region, sparking widespread blackouts.
POLICY WIRE — Sulaimani, Iraq — A drone strike on Sunday forced the shutdown of the Khor Mor gas field, one of the Kurdistan Region’s largest fuel sources for power plants, officials said.
The attack hit the Chamchamal district of the field late Sunday, igniting a large fire and damaging storage tanks, which halted production immediately.
Gas deliveries to regional power stations were suspended, prompting widespread blackouts throughout northern Iraq.
The Kurdistan Regional Government confirmed the drone hit the field’s liquefied petroleum gas section and noted this is the second drone assault on the site in recent weeks.
Authorities indicated the outage could strain electricity supply to the area until repairs are completed.
