Luxury ‘Forever Cruise’ Arrested in Singapore Over Debt
Court records reveal the MV Odyssey luxury cruise ship was detained in Singapore. The Vela Vie-owned vessel faces $500,000 in unpaid supplier debts.
POLICY WIRE — Singapore — The MV Odyssey, a luxury vessel operating as a forever cruise, has been formally arrested at a port in Singapore, according to newly available court records.
The detention marks a dramatic halt for the ship, which began its maiden voyage in October 2024 before encountering severe financial and operational difficulties.
The vessel is currently under the control of its lender, a shift that occurred after the owner, Villa Vie Residences, failed to maintain current loan payments.
Financial disputes appear central to the arrest, with Villa Vie reportedly owing approximately $500,000 to one supplier in the region. It remains unclear if that specific supplier engaged the legal firm responsible for the arrest.
Under maritime law, a ship arrest allows a vessel to be seized or detained to secure claims in legal proceedings.
The initial collapse of the Odyssey’s journey occurred last month in Cambodia, where passengers were given mere hours to vacate the ship.
Insiders recount the final weeks on board as chaotic, describing a frantic search for fuel while the ship sat stalled in Singapore.
Crew members also scrambled to secure food supplies after regular shipments ceased, contributing to the vessel’s instability.
In addition to fuel and supply issues, the ship experienced a period of temporary detention in Hong Kong prior to its final halt.
