A 24-year-old suspect opened fire from a car in a Krakow market square, killing six and wounding dozens before police shot him.
POLICY WIRE — Krakow, Poland — A violent drive-by shooting in the heart of Krakow on Saturday has left at least six people dead and more than a dozen others injured.
According to Małopolska police, the attack began around 3 p.m. local time when the suspect drove a vehicle into the crowded market square and began firing at random pedestrians from the car.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody after being shot by responding officers. He has been transported to a hospital while emergency response teams continue to process the scene and assist the wounded.
The suspect has been identified as a 24-year-old Polish national from the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Officers noted the individual was wearing tactical military clothing and was armed with a long firearm and additional ammunition.
The confirmed fatalities include six victims: four women and two men. Fire department spokesperson Hubert Ciepły indicated that two police officers were injured during the encounter, and an air ambulance was deployed to the area to manage casualties.
While early reports suggested there might have been a second shooter, the Provincial Police Headquarters in Krakow has since refuted those claims. Katarzyna Cisło, a spokeswoman for the Małopolska police, stated on social media that only one perpetrator is in custody and denied reports of an officer’s death.
