A Polish gunman opened fire in Krakow's Main Market Square, killing six people and wounding dozens. Police have arrested the suspect after a violent shootout.
POLICY WIRE — Krakow, Poland — A violent tragedy has unfolded in the heart of Poland’s second largest city after a gunman opened fire in a crowded public space, leaving at least six people dead and numerous others injured.
The massacre began shortly before 3:00 p.m. local time (14:00 GMT) in the bustling Main Market Square. Law enforcement reported that the suspect drove his vehicle into the square before discharging shots at random pedestrians from the car.
Video footage from the scene captures the chaos as civilians fled for safety while the sound of gunfire filled the air. Armed police officers responded quickly to the area, engaging in a direct gunfight with the attacker.
The suspect was shot during the confrontation but remains alive and in custody. Verified footage authenticated by BBC Verify shows an officer confronting the downed suspect and firing several rounds; however, the officer was then seen falling, appearing to have sustained injuries during the exchange.
Local authorities have issued pleas for residents and tourists to avoid the district while a massive investigation is carried out.
To date, the death toll stands at four women and two men. Approximately twelve other individuals suffered injuries, including two police officers who were hit while attempting to apprehend the shooter.
A Polish government minister stated that one of the officers is in a “very critical condition” after sustaining three wounds and is currently undergoing surgery.
While authorities have not yet released the names or ages of the victims, they confirmed the attacker is a male Polish citizen. He was dressed in “military-style attire” and armed with a military-grade weapon.
The motive for the brutal attack remains unconfirmed. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is currently traveling to Krakow to address the public later Saturday. President Karol Nawrocki expressed that he is “deeply concerned” and awaiting a full explanation of the tragedy, while US Ambassador Tom Rose characterized the event as a “savage and murderous attack.\
