Ukraine Exposes Russian Propaganda Tactics Following Staged Oleshky Civilian Evacuation
Ukraine reveals Russian forces staged fake reports of the Oleshky evacuation in Kherson to frame the humanitarian mission and hide military regrouping.
POLICY WIRE — Kherson, Ukraine — Ukrainian officials are warning the public to disregard Russian media claims regarding a recent humanitarian operation in the occupied city of Oleshky.
According to the Center for Strategic Communications, Russian propagandists attempted to manipulate the situation to portray Moscow as a savior force while unfairly blaming Kyiv for the crisis.
On October 30, a Ukrainian delegation traveled into Oleshky in the Kherson region to provide essential aid and facilitate the departure of civilians from the area.
The mission resulted in the safe evacuation of approximately 800 residents, while also delivering critical supplies to those who were unable to leave the area.
This event stood out as a rare instance where Ukraine and Russia coordinated under the oversight of international mediators to address urgent civilian needs.
Despite the collaborative nature of the ceasefire, reports indicate that occupation authorities worked to clear debris and bodies from the streets before Russian television crews arrived to film the scene.
Ukrainian political scientist Ihor Reiterovych noted on NV Radio on November 2 that while Russia poured significant resources into covering the event, they ultimately failed to establish their desired narrative.
Analysis from the Institute for the Study of War suggests the temporary ceasefire may have served as a tactical cover for Russian forces to regroup their positions in the region.
