Russian Missiles Strike Kyiv Leaving Five Injured Ahead of Abu Dhabi Peace Summits
Russian missile attacks in Kyiv injure five people as Ukraine prepares for high-stakes peace negotiations with Russia and the US in Abu Dhabi.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Russian missile explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital early Saturday, resulting in injuries to at least five individuals. The strikes occurred just as Kyiv readies for critical diplomatic engagement with Russia and the United States next week.
Representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States are scheduled to convene on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. This session focuses on a resolution to the ongoing conflict and marks the fourth negotiation round facilitated by the Trump administration, following a previous meeting held in Geneva back in February.
Western nations supporting the peace effort are attempting to identify a new strategic framework to overcome the current deadlock. However, these officials acknowledge that fundamental issues regarding security and territory have yet to be settled.
Local and national authorities reported that the overnight Russian strikes on the capital harmed residential buildings and commercial structures. The blasts also forced the closure of a bridge in Kyiv spanning the Dnipro River and caused fresh disruptions to water and electricity services.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the night assault caused damage to energy infrastructure within both the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions. He noted that the state of the city’s power grid is incredibly dire, which is currently impacting systems responsible for heating and water for residents.
In southern Ukraine, recovery efforts continue in the village of Komyshuvakha. The area was devastated on Monday when multiple Russian guided bombs struck a former school where residents were gathering to receive humanitarian aid.
To date, 55 people have been killed in that attack, with two bodies recovered early Saturday morning while dozens of others remain missing. Komyshuvakha is situated near the active front lines in the Zaporizhzhia region.
