Russell Brand’s Defense Counsel Self-Reports to Regulator After Confronting Journalist
Ian Winter KC has referred himself to the Bar Standards Board following a heated exchange with a Sunday Times reporter during the Russell Brand trial.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The lead defense barrister for Russell Brand has initiated a self-report to professional regulators following allegations of a confrontation with a journalist. The Sunday Times reporter involved was a key figure in a 2023 media inquiry into the actor and comedian.
During a podcast hosted by the Times and Sunday Times on Thursday, Rosamund Urwin recounted that she attempted to introduce herself to Ian Winter KC outside the courtroom once the verdicts were announced. She described his reaction as a snarl, noting that he told her he hoped she was pleased with herself.
Urwin further stated that while she cannot recall the exact words, she had read reports suggesting Winter expressed satisfaction that justice had been served. She also alleged that the barrister used profanity toward her and remarked that she was not the source of the issues.
In a formal statement released Friday, Winter indicated that the manner the events were described in the press warranted a review under professional scrutiny. He confirmed he has submitted a report to the Bar Standards Board, the body responsible for the conduct of barristers in England and Wales.
The legal proceedings against Brand followed a September 2023 investigation by Channel 4 Dispatches and the Times, in which four women accused him of sexual assault, rape, and emotional abuse. The comedian has consistently denied all of these allegations.
While the women in the media investigation were not the same individuals who brought forward the formal charges in the recent criminal trial. During an October hearing at Southwark Crown Court, Brand’s legal team unsuccessfully attempted to dismiss the case, citing the intense publicity surrounding the documentary, but prosecutors opposed the motion.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley stated on BBC Radio 4 that he would not be surprised if additional individuals came forward with similar claims. He praised the bravery of the witnesses and asserted that the police remain committed to seeking justice for those affected.
Political figures have also commented on their past associations with the actor. Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the alleged crimes as horrific and noted he was unaware of the full scale of the behavior, while former Labour leader Ed Miliband expressed a sense of relief following the conviction.
