Trump Claims ‘Beautiful’ Peace Deal Near as UK Blocks Putin’s G20 Invite
Donald Trump signals a major peace agreement for Ukraine is close while the UK refuses to invite Putin to the G20 summit despite US diplomatic shifts.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, DC — US President Donald Trump has indicated that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is nearing a resolution, suggesting that the final settlement may require participation from the entire European continent.
The President held private discussions with Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev at the White House. This encounter occurred while First Lady Melania Trump hosted official delegations from both Kyiv and Moscow.
Trump described the forthcoming negotiations as a significant and beautiful agreement that would extend far beyond the borders of Ukraine, potentially involving all of Europe. He expressed confidence that the outcome would leave all parties satisfied.
A delegation from the United States is currently prepared to facilitate mediation talks in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11 between the opposing Russian and Ukrainian representatives.
In a separate diplomatic development, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed Vladimir Putin will not receive an invitation to next year’s G20 summit. This stance marks a departure from previous statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who noted in September that Washington had an invitation for the December meeting in Miami.
Kirill Dmitriev, acting representing Russian President Vladimir Putin, remarked that a recent ceasefire in the Russian-controlled city of Oleshky demonstrated the results possible through collective cooperation, determination, and compassion.
During the event hosted by Melania Trump, Dmitriev stated that the Russian President values the efforts made by the US President to foster peace.
Despite these diplomatic movements, the Russian military reported strikes on an energy storage battery facility in the Kyiv region and a cargo ship near the Black Sea port of Odesa. The Russian defense ministry claimed both targets were utilized for military operations.
These attacks occurred less than 24 hours after the Russian and Ukrainian officials were received by the First Lady at the White House.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed concern that Europe could lose relevance in peace negotiations if they continue without a single, empowered representative. In a letter to EU Council President Antonio Costa, she argued that Italy is not seeking a specific seat at the negotiating table but will not accept agreements made without an EU mandate.
Costa responded to Meloni by agreeing that the continent must act with unity and coherence.
Russian sources also indicated that Aerospace Forces recently bombed a power station near Sumy and a military brigade in the Zaporizhzhia region using FAB-3000 bombs.
While Trump confirmed the meeting with Putin’s envoy on Thursday, he declined to disclose the details of their conversation and denied meeting with the Ukrainian officials present during the visit.
Iranian state media reported that President Putin met with high-ranking security official Mohsen Rezaei at the Kremlin. Rezaei carried a message from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to discuss various proposals for ending hostilities.
Rezaei noted that their discussions focused on important regional issues and significant arrangements regarding the post-war period and security.
Meanwhile, a Finnish court recently convicted the captain and a crew member of a cargo ship for damaging undersea communications cables in the Baltic Sea last year. The Helsinki District Court found them guilty of aggravated sabotage, sentencing the Russian captain to three years and six months and the boatswain to two years and ten months, with both ordered to pay repair costs.
Former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith argued that Russia would not be able to sustain its current campaign without active Chinese involvement. Speaking at a conference in Warsaw, he criticized the lack of focus on China, stating that ignoring the nation represents a surrender to their primary threat.
Smith emphasized that he has frequently told Washington that the path to defending Taiwan passes through Kyiv, warning that forgetting this would lead to the loss of Taiwan as the US would be perceived as weak.
