Nate Silver Suggests Trump Could Resign Following GOP Midterm Defeat
Top pollster Nate Silver suggests Donald Trump might quit the presidency after major midterm losses as internal tensions rise within the White House.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — A prominent analyst has proposed the possibility that President Donald Trump might unexpectedly resign from office following devastating losses for the Republican Party in the recent midterm elections.
Nate Silver, who gained recognition for forecasting the Democratic takeover of the House and Senate, shared these thoughts on the Still Counting podcast Wednesday while evaluating the political trajectory of Vice President JD Vance.
In the wake of the November 3 results, Vance offered a harsh critique, attributing the GOP defeat to the conflict with Iran. Some analysts viewed these comments as an attempt by the Vice President to distance himself from the President.
Silver noted that the relationship between the two leaders is a significant development to monitor, observing that it was once more common for presidents and vice presidents to act as rivals than in the modern era.
The analyst explained he had a strange intuition that Trump might seek a reason to step down because the President could find himself in an isolated political position.
During the broadcast, Silver mused whether the President might simply retreat to Mar-a-Lago or the West Village to open a karaoke bar and speak freely about politics, leaving the presidency entirely to Vance.
While such a resignation would be historically unique, there is currently no indication that the President is considering the move. In American history, only Richard Nixon has resigned from the presidency, in 1974.
Despite the losses, the President appeared largely unaffected by the election outcomes, which saw Democrats secure victories in traditionally red states such as South Carolina, Kansas, and Texas.
During a Fox News interview on election night, Trump acknowledged that the Iran war might have influenced voters but maintained that his decision to enter the conflict was correct.
The President also criticized his own party’s candidates, congratulated the Democratic opposition on their performance, and indicated he was open to cooperating with them.
By the following day, Trump seemed focused on other matters, leading reporters through a section of the White House ballroom currently undergoing renovation.
When questioned about the possibility of impeachment, the President told a reporter to watch a steel beam being installed in the ballroom instead.
In contrast to his public demeanor, the atmosphere within the administration is described as strained, with officials seeking to determine who was for the widespread electoral defeats.
Reports suggest Trump has consulted advisors regarding the potential firing of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth due to his role in the Iran war. Additionally, sources indicate that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also facing pressure to resign.
The White House has officially refuted these claims, with a spokesperson stating that the President leads a unified and strong team dedicated to serving the public.
