Heroic Carpenter’s Final 911 Call Reveals Intense Moments During Deadly Bend Oregon School Shooting
A released 911 call reveals Kaylub Giamanco's frantic efforts to stop a teenage shooter at Silver Rail Elementary, saving countless lives.
POLICY WIRE — Bend, Oregon — A newly released 911 recording has captured the high-stakes moments when a local citizen took upon himself to stop a massacre at Silver Rail Elementary School last October.
Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter, is being celebrated for his bravery after confronting a teenage shooter who resulted in the deaths of a teacher and three young students.
Giamanco was returning home for his lunch break when he witnessed 16-year-old Griffin J. John II firing a shotgun at a pickup truck before climbing the school’s perimeter fence.
Recognizing the danger, Giamanco grabbed a .40-caliber handgun from his vehicle, loaded a magazine, and contacted emergency services before moving toward the school grounds.
The audio of the call, which lasted just over sixty seconds, features Giamanco informing the dispatcher that an armed individual was at the school where his daughter studies.
“I have a gun and I will shoot them right now,” the man told the operator during the tense exchange.
The dispatcher urged him to remain back and wait for law enforcement to arrive, but Giamanco grew increasingly impatient as the situation unfolded before his eyes.
“I’m about to go kill this kid,” Giamanco stated to the operator moments before the shooter entered the school building.
Seconds later, Giamanco reported that the suspect had moved inside the structure. When the emergency operator asked if the weapon was active, Giamanco confirmed that it was.
The attacker had forced his way through locked doors into a special needs classroom, where a teacher and three children were killed and another student critically wounded.
Giamanco told Oregon Public Broadcasting that he heard children crying for their lives as he entered the facility, leading him to believe this might be his final act on earth.
He fired at the suspect once, causing him to fall, but discharged two more rounds when he saw the gunman reach for his again to ensure he could not harm others.
While President Trump praised Giamanco as a hero who prevented further loss of life, the carpenter himself expressed deep grief for the children he was unable to protect.
