JetBlue Increases Checked Bagage Fees for Second Time Amid Soaring Fuel Costs
JetBlue raises checked bag fees to up to $55 as rising fuel prices impact operations. Learn how the new pricing affects your travel.
POLICY WIRE — New York — JetBlue announced on Tuesday a further increase in its checked baggage rates, marking the second price adjustment within the past year. The airline attributed the move to contending with escalating expenses related to jet fuel and general operations.
For most economy-class passengers traveling on domestic, Caribbean, or Latin American routes, the cost to check a single bag is now $50. This represents a significant jump from the $39 rate charged during off-peak travel.
During high-demand peak periods, the fee will reach $55, up from the previous peak rate of $49.
This latest hike follows a similar adjustment in March, when the carrier raised fees by up to $9. At that time, the company cited “rising operating costs” as the primary driver for the change.
To mitigate these costs, JetBlue advises passengers to register luggage at least 24 hours before their flight. Doing so can save travelers up to $15 on their first checked item.
Certain loyalty and credit card tiers still enjoy benefits. JetBlue Plus, JetBlue Business, and JetBlue Premier cardholders can check one free bag for themselves and up to three traveling companions. TrueBlue Mosaic members also qualify for at least one free bag, while those in Mosaic tiers 2, 3, and 4 are entitled to two free checked bags.
The industry-wide pressure follows volatility in the global oil market. Jet fuel remains the second most expensive expense for airlines after labor. According to data from Airlines for America, jet fuel prices surged to $4.41 per gallon on Monday, more than doubling the $2 per gallon price recorded in January.
JetBlue is not alone in adjusting its pricing; major competitors such as Delta, United, and Southwest have also implemented baggage fee increases throughout the year.
