Iliana Yotova Secures Historic Victory to Become Bulgaria’s First Elected Female President
Iliana Yotova wins Bulgaria's presidential runoff, promising an era of peace while signaling a shift in foreign policy regarding Russia and Ukraine.
POLICY WIRE — Sofia, Bulgaria — Iliana Yotova has successfully secured a five-year term as the President of Bulgaria after winning the runoff election on Sunday. The 62-year-old makes history as the first woman to be elected to the nation’s highest office.
Official data indicates that Yotova captured 57.6% of the vote in the second round. She defeated former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov, who finished with 39.5% of the support, according to results released immediately following the vote.
Throughout the campaign, Yotova positioned herself as a “president of peace.” Her platform centered on fostering dialogue with Moscow and expressing a firm opposition to providing additional military aid to Ukraine.
The election unfolded against a backdrop of deep national divisions regarding the conflict in neighboring Ukraine. Voters were particularly concerned about heightened security risks in the Black Sea, following an increase in drone strikes directed at commercial shipping vessels.
Yotova, who previously served as the acting president, received the official backing of the Progressive Bulgaria government. Her victory is seen by many analysts as a mandate for a pro-Russian stance and a desire for closer diplomatic ties with Russia.
