MI5 Escapes Contempt of Court Charges Over False Evidence in Three Cases
Court rules against MI5 contempt charges despite false evidence in three cases, citing public interest. London High Court drops legal action against spy agen...
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Britain’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, and its senior leadership will not face legal penalties for submitting dishonest testimony to the court system.
Senior judges at the High Court determined that pursuing contempt of court proceedings against the agency or any specific officer would not serve the public interest.
This decision was rendered even after MI5 admitted that the evidence provided in three separate court cases was false.
The court noted that while the Security Service “fell badly short” in its duties, initiating legal action was not advisable under current circumstances.
The ruling specifically clears the agency’s director-general and other staff members from facing formal contempt charges.
