UK Businesses Warned of Food Shortages as AI Cyber Attack Threats Surge
The NCSC warns UK businesses must defend against AI-powered cyber attacks to prevent supermarket shortages and power blackouts across critical infrastructure.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The nation’s top cybersecurity authority has issued a stark warning for businesses to bolster defenses or face the reality of empty supermarket shelves and widespread power outages.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) reports that the United Kingdom is experiencing an unprecedented surge in the frequency of cyber incidents according to its latest assessment.
Central to this threat is the role of artificial intelligence, which is currently helping industrialize cyber operations. Officials predict that it is highly likely that AI will be deployed to target Britain’s critical national infrastructure by the year 2028.
In response to these escalating threats, the government is advising households to brace for at least three days of significant disruption.
Wes Streeting has urged ministers to issue a ‘be ready’ checklist as they prepare for state-sponsored terrorism and cyber strikes that could result in severe food shortages.
The chief executive of the NCSC noted that vulnerable technology has already been exploited within the UK. This follows apparent cyber attacks targeted at supermarket freezers across mainland Europe.
The warning serves as a critical call for companies and government entities worldwide to take urgent measures to protect essential services from increasingly sophisticated digital threats.
