Iran-US Peace Deal Stalled Despite Intensified Diplomatic Mediations
Despite active mediation in Qatar, a senior Iranian official confirms a peace deal with the US remains out of reach following recent military tensions.
POLICY WIRE — DUBAI, UAE — Iran and the United States remain distant from securing an agreement to conclude their conflict, according to a high-ranking Iranian official on Tuesday. This admission comes despite a surge in diplomatic activity aimed at preventing a resurgence of major hostilities following the recent US midterm elections.
The government of Qatar has increased its role as a mediator, working to bridge gaps between the two nations. However, the Iranian official indicated that the fundamental obstacles to a breakthrough remain in place despite these persistent efforts.
Tensions were recently fueled overnight when the US military conducted ‘defensive’ airstrikes on Iran’s Qeshm island. Washington stated these operations were necessary to neutralize surface-to-air missiles that posed a threat.
In the wake of these events, the Iranian delegation departed from negotiations in Qatar after a difficult weekend of talks. While mediators continue to circulate various proposals between Tehran and Washington, Iran reportedly anticipates a potential return to full-scale warfare.
