20-Year-Old Pilot Among Among Nine Killed After Private Jet Crashes into Palm Beach Neighborhood
A Learjet 60 traveling from Texas to the Bahamas crashed in Palm Beach, killing all nine people on board, including young pilot Nathalia Filgueiras.
POLICY WIRE — Palm Beach, Florida — A 20-year-old pilot was on board a private jet that went down in a Florida neighborhood on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of all nine occupants.
Nathalia Filgueiras, a resident of Boca Raton, was co-piloting a Learjet 60 during a flight from Texas to the Bahamas when the aircraft suddenly plummeted. The plane struck a residential area in Palm Beach, creating a large, smoking crater on the side of a street.
According to Filgueiras’ mother, Camila Corteleti, the young woman had a lifelong dedication to aviation. Since obtaining her pilot’s license at the age of 17, she had accumulated more than 1,300 hours of flight experience.
Corteleti told The New York Times that her daughter cherished the independence of flying, noting that she found viewing the world from above to be a completely unique experience.
The flight was being conducted for Upper Jets, a private charter firm located in Fort Lauderdale. While Filgueiras was serving as co-pilot, the second pilot remains unidentified, and it is unknown who was at the controls at the moment the aircraft began its descent.
