Karl Bushby Returns to Hull: Walking 31,000 Miles Across 29 Countries After 28 Years
Karl Bushby ends a 28-year, 31,000-mile global trek, reuniting with family in Hull after traversing 29 countries and extreme global hardships.
POLICY WIRE — Hull, England — British adventurer Karl Bushby completed a 28-year voyage around the globe on Monday, arriving back at the family home where he began his historic undertaking.
The journey spanned approximately 31,000 miles across 29 countries, marking the conclusion of an expedition that originally projected a 12-year timeline but was extended by numerous unforeseen delays.
Bushby first departed from Hull on 5 October 1998 with the ambitious goal of walking “with unbroken footsteps” from the southern tip of South America to his hometown.
Upon his return, the adventurer shared an emotional reunion with his weeping mother, highlighting the personal conclusion of a trek fraught with significant physical dangers.
Throughout the expedition, Bushby navigated encounters with polar bears, kidnappers, and a period in Russian custody while accumulating over 30,000 miles on foot.
The initial plan for the Goliath Expedition envisioned covering 36,000 miles (58,000 km), a scope that expanded significantly as the trek progressed through complex logistical and geopolitical challenges.
Reports indicated that despite completing the arduous circuit, the return to familiar streets in northern England presented its own immediate hurdles for the seasoned walker.
