Somali Pirates Hijack Iranian Fishing Trawler, Threatening Global Shipping Lanes
Somali pirates seize the Iranian fishing vessel Azini, sparking fears the ship will be used as a base for attacks on commercial cargo ships.
POLICY WIRE — Gulf of Aden — Somali pirates have captured an Iranian fishing boat known as the Azini, prompting urgent warnings regarding the safety of international commercial maritime traffic in the region.
The Maritime Security Center for the Indian Ocean reported that the vessel was navigating a major commercial shipping lane when it was taken. Authorities are concerned the hijacked craft could be utilized as a strategic base for further maritime raids.
An anonymous officer informed The Associated Press that a group of 12 pirates carried out the seizure. The vessel’s manifest included 21 Iranian crew members along with two Somali security guards.
In response to the incident, the security center has advised all vessels in the vicinity to maintain high levels of alertness and immediately report any suspicious behavior.
This hijacking marks a troubling resurgence in Somali piracy activity throughout the western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden. Since April, pirates have successfully intercepted six commercial ships.
Security analysts note that several of these recent attacks have occurred significant distances away from the Somali coastline, indicating an expanding reach for the pirate groups.
