RAF’s ‘Cinderella Service’ 12,500 Fallen Heroes Honored in New Digital Memorial
A new online database honors 12,500 Coastal Command airmen, the forgotten 'Cinderella Service,' safeguarding WW2 sea lanes before their ultimate sacrifice.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A new virtual memorial has opened to honor the forgotten heroes of the Royal Air Force’s Coastal Command branch, ensuring their legacy is never lost to history despite being long overlooked.
The initiative adds the names of these servicemembers to a centralized online record, acknowledging those who paid the ultimate price during the battle for Britain’s sea lanes.
Known colloquially as the Cinderella Service, this critical RAF unit was tasked with escorting Allied convoys, defending against U-boats, and engaging enemy surface fleets throughout World War Two.
The database, hosted at a center on Canwick Avenue, provides families, researchers, and the public with a dedicated space to search and remember these individuals from anywhere in the world.
Effective from 1 September, the resource allows global access to the stories and records of the fallen, transforming a digital platform into a permanent site of remembrance.
This comprehensive record now reveals the identities and histories of 12,500 Coastal Command personnel who lost their lives while protecting Britain’s maritime security during the Second World War.
