POLICY WIRE — St Helier, Jersey — An animal welfare group has asked motorists to reduce speed after seven red squirrels were injured on the island’s roads in a single day.
The JSPCA Animals’ Shelter, located in St Helier, said the incidents occurred on Friday, Oct. 30, and urged drivers to stay vigilant in wooded sections where the creatures gather nuts and seeds.
According to the charity, it has rescued 35 red squirrels so far this year, with injuries caused by vehicle collisions as well as falls from nests.
Local resident Kate Hobart shared a heartfelt social‑media message after a red squirrel was killed on Sandy Lane, a route linking Whitecroft and Blackwater, pleading for more cautious driving. “This is a plea to people who either drive down Sandy Lane (Whitecroft-Blackwater) because they live here, use the vets, or just use it …”
The shelter’s appeal highlights the need for extra care during the autumn season, when squirrels are most active collecting food.
