Macklemore Speaks Out at Free Palestine Concert: ‘It Was More Uncomfortable to Stay Silent’
US rapper Macklemore takes a stand for Palestine at London concert, addressing the conflict and calling for humanitarian support.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — US rapper Macklemore, known by his real name Benjamin Haggerty, addressed the crowd at the OVO Arena Wembley on Friday night, expressing his support for Palestine. During an emotional speech, the 43-year-old performer stated that he found it more uncomfortable to stay silent than to speak out about the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
I was scrolling, seeing the horrific, unimaginable catastrophe unfolding before us, and at a certain point, it became more uncomfortable for me to stay silent, Macklemore told the enthusiastic audience.
He emphasized that speaking out is a human act, not a courageous one. “Those children in Gaza are our children. There is no separation,” he declared, met with loud cheers and chants of ‘Free Palestine’ from the crowd.
Singer Paloma Faith also joined Macklemore on stage, sharing her thoughts on motherhood and the value of every child’s life. The 45-year-old, who recently gave birth to her third child, acknowledged the fear of taking a public stance but felt compelled to speak. It’s scary to be in the public eye and say something, but it’s not as scary as the consequences of not doing it, she said.
Faith reflected on the universality of children’s needs and rights, stating, It breaks my heart to think that anyone believes their children are more important than others. Every child deserves to feel safe in their mother’s arms.
Swedish activist Greta Thunberg also took the stage, urging the audience to take meaningful action beyond attending concerts and making donations. We can change hearts and minds, but that must be paired with actual policy changes, she asserted.
Macklemore’s Free Palestine tour began in Dublin earlier this week and continued to Paris. The tour, which sold out quickly, features various artists joining to raise funds for humanitarian aid and support for Palestinians.
Proceeds from the concerts will support organizations such as Anera, Glia, Gaza Soup Kitchen, Taawon, Heal Palestine, Palestinian Youth Movement, Middle East Children’s Alliance, Jewish Voice for Peace, Medical Aid for Palestinians, Institute for Middle East Understanding, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, and UNRWA USA.
