UN Security Council to Vote on Extending MINURSO Mission to 2026 After Russia Vetoes U.S. Draft
UN Security Council set to vote on extending the MINURSO mission in Western Sahara until 2026, after Russia vetoed a U.S. draft.
POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to vote this afternoon on a draft resolution that would extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for a full year, until 31 October 2026.
The vote comes after Russia exercised its veto power last week on a U.S.-drafted resolution that had proposed a further extension until 31 October 2027, leaving the mission without a renewed mandate as its current term nears expiration.
The Russian proposal, which sought to keep MINURSO’s name and mandate unchanged, was rejected by the council, putting the future of the long‑standing mission in uncertainty. Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal has further complicated prospects for a new agreement, as the country remains in favor of the existing framework for the disputed territory.
