Flavio Bolsonaro Claims Presidency Amid U.S. Departure Following Election Loss
Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has declared himself Brazil's rightful president-elect after fleeing to the U.S. following his defeat to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
POLICY WIRE — Sao Paulo, Brazil — Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro announced on Wednesday that he has relocated to the United States. He stated his departure was intended to escape what he described as the politicization of the justice system in Brazil.
Despite his electoral defeat to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro asserted that he is the legitimate president-elect. He alleged that his victory was obstructed by an electoral coup d’etat orchestrated by the leftist administration, though he provided no evidence to support these claims.
The senator, who is currently under investigation in his home country, arrived in the U.S. on Wednesday morning. He has vowed to spearhead the political opposition from abroad.
President Lula addressed the situation with an ironic comment regarding the Bolsonaro family’s relationship with the Donald Trump administration, noting that the family appears to view the United States as their primary home. Flávio is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a prison sentence for his role in an attempted coup following the 2022 election.
The 2022 presidential race, which saw Jair Bolsonaro defeated by Lula, remains the closest election result in Brazilian history. Jair Bolsonaro was subsequently declared ineligible to hold public office on June 30, 2023, due to findings of political power abuse and the misuse of media.
