Mercedes’ Multi-Million Dollar Bet on Kimi Antonelli Pays Off After Ferrari Rejection
Mercedes invested $10 million in Kimi Antonelli after Ferrari passed on the talent. The Italian is now poised to become F1's youngest world champion.
POLICY WIRE — Mexico City, Mexico — Ferrari supporters are left to contemplate a significant missed opportunity as local talent Kimi Antonelli prepares to potentially secure a historic Formula One world championship.
Now 20 years old, Antonelli is on the verge of becoming Italy’s first F1 titleholder in 73 years, as well as the youngest champion in the history of the sport. This milestone serves as a direct result of a nine-year development program funded by Mercedes.
The German racing team first identified Antonelli’s potential when he was just an 11-year-old go-kart racer in 2018. Over the subsequent nine years, Mercedes invested approximately $10 million to nurture his career, a move that former Ferrari boss Montezemolo has acknowledged as a major missed chance for the Italian team.
Mercedes team principal and co-owner Toto Wolff attributed the successful recruitment of the young driver to Gwen Lagrue. Lagrue, who is slated to depart for Red Bull next year to lead their junior driver initiative, was instrumental in bringing the Italian prospect into the Mercedes fold.
With the championship title within reach this Sunday, the long-term strategy employed by Mercedes appears to be yielding its ultimate reward. The decision to sign the young karting prospect has effectively reshaped the trajectory of modern Formula One.
