Indonesia Deploys Hundreds of Security Forces in Jakarta Ahead of Student Rallies
Indonesia deploys hundreds of security personnel and armored vehicles in Jakarta as students protest President Prabowo Subianto's policies and wildfires.
POLICY WIRE — Jakarta, Indonesia — Hundreds of Indonesian security personnel were deployed on Wednesday in anticipation of student demonstrations targeting several policies enacted by President Prabowo Subianto, alongside the government’s response to ongoing forest fires.
A substantial deployment of police and military forces, accompanied by armored vehicles, became visible throughout busy sectors of central Jakarta on Wednesday morning.
Students representing the University of Indonesia have organized to demand that Jakarta officials formally designate the wildfires as a national disaster while simultaneously freezing expenditures tied to the free meals initiative.
This heightened security posture arrives less than six weeks after a prior demonstration near the DPR/MPR complex on August 27, an event that resulted in hundreds of detentions following clashes and civil unrest around the parliamentary district, Pejompongan, and Slipi.
During August 2025, thousands of students and citizens participated in nationwide demonstrations challenging government funding allocations, a period of unrest that left 10 people dead.
Authorities previously noted that more than 9,000 Indonesian police officers were deployed across the capital city on Tuesday to manage demonstrations commemorating President Prabowo Subianto’s two years in office, following earlier security escalations around parliament and major urban centers.
