Melania Trump Announces Expansion of Localized Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire in Kherson
First lady Melania Trump confirms a localized ceasefire in Oleshky has expanded across the Kherson region to facilitate critical humanitarian aid delivery.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — U.S. First Lady Melania Trump announced on Tuesday that a localized ceasefire brokered between Russia and Ukraine has been expanded beyond the city of Oleshky to cover a broader area within the Kherson region.
The truce, which aims to provide safe passage for humanitarian convoys, was initially scheduled to begin on October 29 but was advanced to October 27 to address urgent civilian needs. The pause in hostilities is intended to allow food, water, and medical supplies to reach residents stranded in the Russian-occupied territory.
Oleshky, located approximately 340 miles southeast of Kyiv, has been under Russian control since the start of the 2022 invasion. The town sits directly across the Dnipro River from the city of Kherson.
Despite the localized pause, the broader conflict continues to escalate. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched 16 ballistic missiles and 280 drones overnight, targeting energy infrastructure, logistics hubs, and urban centers across the country.
Zelenskyy condemned the ongoing strikes, stating that Russia is consistently taking new steps toward escalation. These developments occur as international diplomatic efforts intensify, with upcoming trilateral peace talks involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff recently visited Europe for separate discussions with Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders have expressed openness to negotiations, though they maintain that security guarantees remain a prerequisite for any lasting agreement.
On Tuesday, Putin held discussions with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre regarding diplomatic paths to end the war. According to the Norwegian government, both leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine and emphasized the necessity of resuming peace talks.
Meanwhile, previous diplomatic initiatives, including an energy-focused ceasefire announced by President Donald Trump on October 11, have struggled to produce significant results. Ukrainian officials have expressed concern that recent developments, such as Russian diesel exports and restrictions on SpaceX’s Starlink service, have emboldened Moscow to increase attacks on civilian and energy targets.
