Citigroup and BCA Research Downgrade Brazilian Assets Following Lula Election Victory
Citigroup and BCA Research downgrade Brazilian equities and currency, citing fiscal concerns following Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's recent election win.
POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Citigroup and BCA Research have officially downgraded their outlook on Brazilian assets in the wake of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s recent election victory. Financial analysts point to a deteriorating risk-reward profile for the nation’s bonds, equities, and currency as the primary driver for the shift.
The market reaction was swift on Monday, with the Brazilian real suffering a decline of more than 11% against the US dollar. Simultaneously, the Bovespa index experienced a sharp downturn, shedding 13.9% of its value as investors began to re-evaluate the country’s fiscal discipline and the future of structural reforms.
Citigroup moved to exit its bullish positions on Monday, officially closing its overweight call on equities and liquidating its long position in the Brazilian real. The firm cited significant uncertainty regarding the incoming administration’s economic policy trajectory.
BCA Research, which had already maintained a bearish stance on the region, adopted an even more cautious tone in its latest assessment. The Canadian firm downgraded local equities from neutral to underweight, effectively issuing a sell rating, and advised clients to stay away from the Brazilian market while recommending the purchase of five-year credit default swaps.
