Greenfield Queer Venue ‘The Last Ditch’ Announces Closure Following Viral Covid Policy Dispute
The Last Ditch, a prominent Massachusetts queer bar, is closing its doors after a viral controversy over its mask-optional policy impacted operations.
POLICY WIRE — Greenfield, USA — The Last Ditch, a downtown Greenfield establishment recognized as one of the few remaining queer venues in the region, has announced it is preparing to shut down operations.
Management shared the news via Instagram, stating that the business is seeking new owners immediately. The venue has initiated a soft closing, though it confirmed that all previously booked events will proceed as scheduled.
Founded in 2025 by housemates Asa Rosario, Jackie Matellian, and Sage Territo, the bar was created to serve as a community hub for lesbians, trans individuals, and local activists. The founders established the space to fill a void left by the closure of two other local queer-friendly venues in the city of approximately 17,000 residents.
The bar gained significant international attention in September following a report by The Boston Globe regarding internal disagreements over Covid-19 safety protocols. In an attempt to increase revenue, the owners had transitioned to a mask-optional policy on Saturday nights.
This decision sparked a fierce backlash on social media, with critics arguing the move alienated immunocompromised patrons. Conversely, other online commentators mocked the concerns raised by those who favored stricter masking requirements.
The controversy became so widespread that the talent agency UTA reportedly received inquiries from Hollywood studios interested in adapting the story for film or television. Despite the surge in interest and a temporary increase in foot traffic, the owners determined the business was no longer sustainable.
Reflecting on the closure, the founders noted that they had dedicated their lives to building a network of care and a home base for organizing, but concluded that it is time to pass it on. Amy Cahillane, the Director of Community and Economic Development for Greenfield, remarked that losing a small business is always a regrettable outcome.
