Ukrainian Veterans Reveal Brutal Realities of Russian Captivity and Frontline Combat
Ukrainian soldiers share harrowing accounts of survival, weight loss, and psychological warfare after enduring Russian captivity in the ongoing conflict.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — A Ukrainian veteran named Anatolii, who served in the small garrison that defended Mariupol during the 2022 siege, is emphasizing the necessity of basic medical training for civilians. He insists that everyone in Ukraine should know how to apply a tourniquet and how to stop someone’s bleeding.
The veteran’s testimony is part of a broader look at the experiences of Ukrainian soldiers captured during the Russia-Ukraine war. These accounts detail the harsh conditions faced by prisoners of war and the intense combat scenarios that preceded their capture.
In one instance, a 19-year-old soldier named Andrii described being held in a featureless room filled with bunk beds, noting that he saw very few Ukrainian troops on the front line before he was taken prisoner.
Another soldier, Vladyslav Kharytonov, was captured by Russian forces on his 21st birthday following a fierce battle for the village of Kamyanka, located near Izium. After spending more than two years in captivity, he returned home weighing approximately 60 kilograms.
Kharytonov has since spoken about the systematic use of fear, humiliation, and propaganda within the Russian prison system designed to break the spirit of Ukrainian captives. His story highlights the enduring psychological and physical toll of the conflict on those who fought to the end.
