A major fire broke out at the world's largest Quaker Oats milling plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Officials confirm all employees are safe and accounted for.
POLICY WIRE — Cedar Rapids, Iowa — A significant fire erupted at the Quaker Oats manufacturing plant in Cedar Rapids on Saturday following an apparent explosion at the site. The facility, recognized by the company as the largest milling operation of its kind globally, was quickly attended to by local emergency crews.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department received reports of the blaze at approximately 4:45 p.m. Visual evidence from the scene, including footage shared on social media, depicted thick plumes of black smoke rising over the downtown area, which is home to roughly 140,000 residents.
Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell confirmed in a video statement that all personnel were successfully evacuated from the premises. She noted that the fire was contained to a section of the building used for product handling, which was not heavily staffed at the time, describing the lack of injuries as a blessing.
While the exact cause of the incident remains under investigation, representatives from PepsiCo Foods US confirmed that they are working with local authorities to assess the situation. The facility, owned by the parent company of the 150-year-old Quaker Mill brand, typically processes more than 2 million pounds of oats every day.
