POLICY WIRE — Huntsville, Alabama — On November 15, 2022, a Huntsville shopping center became the focal point of an intensive police investigation after 37-year-old Savannah Tolbert was found dead from a gunshot wound inside a red Tesla. First responders initially encountered her husband, 47-year-old David Tolbert, displaying visible distress near the vehicle. However, investigators quickly noticed inconsistencies between the physical evidence at the scene and a self-inflicted shooting narrative.
Authorities observed that the fatal bullet entered the back left side of Savannah Tolbert’s head, yet the firearm was resting in her right hand across her lap. Investigators Greg Hayden and Jeff Kreiter of the Huntsville Police Major Crimes Unit spearheaded the inquiry, alongside prosecutors Ben Gibbons and Shea Keller. Further compounding suspicions, gunshot residue tests administered at the police station revealed positive traces on David Tolbert’s hands, while testing on the victim yielded no such residue.
As the investigation deepened, detectives uncovered an extramarital affair between David Tolbert, a retired corrections officer, and aerospace missiles engineer Chelsea Finch. Although David Tolbert maintained that his wife had struggled with depression and anxiety, her family firmly rejected the notion that she would take her own life, noting her deep devotion to her daughter, Avery. Medical examiner Dr. Jonrika Malone ultimately classified the manner of death as homicide, determining that the weapon was fired from a distance of at least three to four feet.
Crucial evidence emerged from a grainy security camera positioned approximately 100 yards away at Valley Pools, which captured the timeline of events around the red Tesla. Following a three-day trial in May 2025, a Huntsville jury deliberated and found David Tolbert guilty of capital murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole and incarcerated at the Limestone Correctional Facility, where he had previously worked as a corrections officer.
