HKEX Debuts AI and Semiconductor Indexes to Track Tech Growth
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing launches new AI and semiconductor stock indexes, partnering with China Southern Asset Management for a mainland China ETF.
POLICY WIRE — Hong Kong, China — Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) officially introduced two specialized stock market indexes on Friday, targeting the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence and semiconductor sectors.
The newly established HKEX Artificial Intelligence Index tracks 40 companies involved in the AI value chain, including firms focused on infrastructure and chip design. This benchmark serves as the exchange’s first index dedicated to the AI sector, providing investors with a representative view of Hong Kong-listed technology performance.
Simultaneously, the exchange launched the HKEX Semiconductor Index, which monitors the 30 largest semiconductor-related stocks listed in Hong Kong. This index covers a broad range of industry activities, such as manufacturing, hardware, storage, equipment, and components.
Both indexes are designed to provide real-time data and will undergo quarterly rebalancing to maintain accuracy. These benchmarks aim to offer investors a clearer picture of the technological landscape within the Hong Kong market.
In a related move, HKEX signed a licensing agreement with China Southern Asset Management Co., Ltd. This deal allows the asset manager to utilize the HKEX Artificial Intelligence Index to develop an exchange-traded fund (ETF) for investors in mainland China.
While the licensing agreement is finalized, specific details regarding the launch of the new ETF product will be disclosed at a later date.
