POLICY WIRE — Bend, Oregon — A father who intervened during a deadly shooting at his daughter’s school is speaking out for the first time, detailing the moments he confronted an armed assailant to prevent further loss of life.
Kaylub Giamanco, 36, shared his account with Oregon Public Broadcasting one week after the tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary School, which resulted in the deaths of three children and one teacher.
Giamanco was driving past the school last Thursday when he witnessed a teenage gunman, identified as Griffin John, forcing his way into the building while armed with a shotgun.
The father described entering a state of full panic mode upon realizing the shooter was heading toward the facility where his own daughters were students. He acted immediately to neutralize the threat.
