POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The British government has unveiled a significant financial commitment of approximately £600 million, equivalent to roughly $800 million, aimed at fortifying the nation against potential health and security dangers linked to artificial intelligence.
Announced on Saturday, the funding package prioritizes the establishment of a new biosecurity initiative. A substantial portion of these resources is dedicated to the creation of an AI Biosecurity Lab, which has been allocated £100 million to focus on the detection of biological threats.
In addition to detection capabilities, the government has earmarked £65 million specifically for the development of pathogen countermeasures. These efforts are designed to mitigate risks that could arise from the rapid advancement of AI technologies.
The initiative also leverages private sector collaboration, with OpenAI and Anthropic pledging up to £200 million in model credits to support these security objectives. This multi-faceted approach underscores the government’s strategy to address the intersection of emerging technology and public safety.
