Lewis Hamilton Eyes F1 Longevity to Fulfill African Grand Prix Dream
Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton reveals that the upcoming Rwandan Grand Prix could extend his Formula 1 career into the 2030s to fulfill his dream.
POLICY WIRE — Austin, United States — Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has indicated that the prospect of racing in Africa may extend his Formula 1 career significantly. The veteran driver expressed that the sport’s recent agreement to host a Grand Prix in Rwanda has provided him with a new incentive to remain on the grid.
Hamilton, who will turn 42 in January and is currently under contract through 2027, noted that competing on the African continent has long been a personal ambition. Discussing the upcoming event, he remarked, I’m now forced to stay a lot longer because we have a race in Africa, and that is been my dream, to be able to race in Africa.
The proposed race is slated for the 2030s, with development currently underway for a circuit in Bugesera, located 25 miles south of the capital. Depending on the construction timeline, Hamilton could be as old as 46 by the time the inaugural event takes place.
While the announcement has generated excitement, Hamilton also acknowledged the scrutiny surrounding the host nation from various human rights organizations. Despite these concerns, the driver remains focused on the milestone of bringing the sport back to Africa.
