Ukrainian Teen Detained Over Alleged Poisoning Plot Targeting Soldiers
Ukrainian authorities have arrested a 17-year-old girl accused of distributing lethal methadone to soldiers under orders from Russian security services.
POLICY WIRE — Zhytomyr, Ukraine — Ukrainian law enforcement officials announced on Friday the arrest of a 17-year-old girl accused of collaborating with Russian security services to poison military personnel. Authorities allege the teenager was responsible for the deaths of two soldiers.
According to police reports, the suspect utilized the messaging platform Telegram to contact soldiers and send them packages containing what were presented as free drugs. The victims were reportedly instructed to consume the substances on camera, unaware that the capsules were laced with a lethal dose of methadone.
The arrest took place in Zhytomyr, located west of Kyiv. Investigators claim the girl acted under the direction of a Russian handler, receiving a payment of at least 5,000 hryvnias, or approximately $111, for her involvement in the scheme.
Police stated that they successfully identified other intended recipients of the packages, a move they believe prevented four additional murders across the country. The suspect now faces charges of aiding and abetting premeditated murder as part of a prior conspiracy, as well as the distribution of illegal psychotropic substances.
If convicted, the teenager faces a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years. Officials warned that the incident reflects a broader Russian strategy to destabilize Ukraine, urging citizens to avoid accepting food, drinks, or medication from unknown sources.
Since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, both nations have frequently accused one another of recruiting minors for acts of sabotage. This case follows a history of alleged poisoning incidents throughout the conflict, including the 2023 poisoning of Marianna Budanova, the wife of a top Ukrainian intelligence official, and multiple assassination attempts reported by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
