Taiwan Warns of Chinese Militia Vessels Expanding ‘Battlefield Preparation’ in Pacific

POLICY WIRE — Taipei, Taiwan — Taiwan’s Coast Guard has issued a formal warning regarding China’s evolving maritime strategy, alleging that Beijing is integrating militia vessels with coast guard ships to broaden its so-called battlefield preparation throughout the western Pacific.
Officials in Taipei noted that these coordinated operations are not limited to the immediate vicinity of Taiwan, but are also exerting significant pressure on neighboring nations, including Japan and the Philippines.
The concerns follow a surveillance report from August, which documented the first known sighting of a Chinese militia boat operating off Taiwan’s Pacific coastline. The vessel, identified as the Minfudingyu 07902, was observed traveling alongside a Chinese coast guard cutter and a research ship.
According to the Apex Aviation report, the Minfudingyu 07902 is a fishing vessel that functions as part of the People’s Liberation Army’s maritime militia fleet. Taiwanese defense forces are actively monitoring these movements, which are widely interpreted as rehearsals for potential future maritime blockades.
In response to the increased activity, Taiwan is deploying advanced surveillance technology and coordinating with relevant government agencies to track these gray-zone operations. The deployment has sparked fears that Beijing intends to project its maritime influence well beyond Taiwan’s western approaches.
