Federal Crackdown Targets Immigrants in Voter Fraud Investigation
Federal authorities in California are charging legal permanent residents with voter fraud, threatening their path to U.S. citizenship and naturalization.
POLICY WIRE — San Francisco, USA — Federal authorities have launched a sweeping enforcement operation in California, targeting dozens of legal permanent residents accused of illegal voter registration and voting. Many of those caught in the crackdown were actively pursuing U.S. citizenship, and the new charges now jeopardize their legal status and potential for naturalization.
Among those charged is 42-year-old José Antonio Bañuelos-Díaz, a legal resident of 40 years who applied for citizenship in October 2025. Federal documents allege he falsely claimed citizenship while registering for a driver’s license in 2007, though he maintains he never cast a ballot and was unaware of any registration error until his recent arrest.
The Department of Justice has filed charges in 10 of the 28 identified cases, utilizing voter registration data to initiate broader investigations into immigration status. While illegal voting carries a maximum one-year prison sentence, individuals convicted of lying on naturalization applications face up to a decade behind bars.
This initiative aligns with a broader Trump administration effort to address noncitizen voting ahead of the midterm elections. Despite the federal focus, state officials in California argue that the administration’s claims regarding the scale of the issue are significantly inflated and that the state remains in compliance with federal election laws.
