MPs Demand Urgent Expansion of NHS Mounjaro Weight-Loss Program
A cross-party group of MPs warns that current NHS Mounjaro rollout plans are unambitious, urging an urgent review to reach millions more eligible patients.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — A cross-party group of MPs has issued a sharp critique of the government’s strategy for distributing the weight-loss medication Mounjaro, labeling the current NHS rollout as unambitious.
The Health and Social Care Committee warned that the existing three-year plan is set to reach only a woefully small number of people. According to their findings, just 6% of the millions of patients eligible for the GLP-1 drug will actually receive it through the public health system.
Lawmakers are now calling for an urgent review of the rollout, arguing that millions more Britons should be granted access to the treatment. The committee emphasized that the current trajectory forces a vast majority of patients to seek care through private firms instead.
Beyond the specific concerns regarding Mounjaro, the committee argued that the broader approach to NHS weight management requires a complete overhaul. They recommended that obesity be treated as a long-term, managed condition similar to diabetes, rather than a temporary issue.
The report highlights a systemic failure in providing adequate access to a range of essential treatments, including both surgical interventions and pharmaceutical options. MPs are pushing for the pace of the tirzepatide rollout to be reassessed immediately to better serve the public.
