Assassination of Former Prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa Exposes Guatemala’s Deep-Rooted Corruption
The killing of anti-corruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa highlights the dangerous intersection of politics and crime in Guatemala.
POLICY WIRE — Guatemala City, Guatemala — The fatal shooting of Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa, a former anti-corruption prosecutor and ex-head of the Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT), has reignited concerns regarding the dangerous ties between Guatemalan political figures and organized crime syndicates.
While the investigation remains in its early stages, authorities have yet to determine a motive for the attack or identify the individuals responsible for ordering the hit. Solórzano Foppa was widely recognized for his vocal opposition to alleged collusion between business elites and government officials.
His death serves as a grim indicator of the ongoing political violence plaguing the nation. In recent years, more than 100 journalists, rights defenders, judges, and former prosecutors have been forced to flee Guatemala due to threats and intimidation.
The country’s struggle with systemic corruption was previously addressed by the UN-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG). Operating from 2007 to 2019, the commission dismantled various criminal networks, ultimately leading to the resignation and prosecution of former President Otto Perez Molina and his vice president, Roxana Baldetti.
International observers and legal advocates are now calling for a prompt, thorough, and credible investigation into the murder of the prominent lawyer. Security remains heightened as officials work to secure the scene and process suspects currently held in detention.
