UK Military to Deploy Aircraft for Aerial Wildfire Suppression
The UK government is equipping RAF Chinook and A400M aircraft to combat wildfires, establishing a permanent aerial firefighting capability for Britain.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The British government has unveiled a new strategy to combat the increasing threat of wildfires by equipping military aircraft for aerial firefighting operations. This initiative follows a summer season defined by unrelenting blazes and sustained periods of hot, dry weather.
Ahead of England’s inaugural wildfire resilience summit scheduled for Friday, October 23, officials confirmed that the Royal Air Force will modify its fleet to assist in emergency response. This marks the first time the United Kingdom will maintain a permanently based military aerial firefighting capability.
Under the new plan, RAF Chinook helicopters and A400M Atlas transport aircraft will be outfitted with specialized equipment to reach and suppress fires in difficult terrain. The move represents a significant escalation in the government’s efforts to manage climate-related risks following the country’s hottest summer on record.
The summit, hosted by Andy Burnham, will further address the national approach to wildfire management as the government seeks to bolster its defensive measures against future environmental challenges. The integration of military assets is intended to provide a robust, rapid-response solution to large-scale fire incidents across the nation.
