DHS Inspector General Refers Corey Lewandowski Probe to Justice Department
The DHS inspector general has referred an investigation into former aide Corey Lewandowski to the Justice Department regarding a $220 million contract.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general has officially handed over its inquiry into former special government employee Corey Lewandowski to the Justice Department for further review, according to an individual with knowledge of the matter.
The investigation centers on the procurement process for a $220 million advertising contract that featured then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Current Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed during his Senate confirmation hearing in March that the inspector general was actively examining the deal.
The Wall Street Journal initially broke the news regarding the Justice Department’s involvement in the case. The scrutiny follows reports that Lewandowski allegedly sought payments from companies with active business interests before the department.
In March, a representative for Lewandowski issued a firm denial regarding his alleged interactions with the GEO Group. The spokesperson stated, This is absolutely false and did not happen — Mr. Lewandowski never demanded any payment or compensation from the Geo Group, at any time.
Lewandowski, who previously served as a top adviser to Donald Trump and managed his 2016 presidential campaign, worked as a senior aide to Noem. He exited the department following Noem’s departure.
Prior to her firing, Noem faced significant public criticism regarding her efforts to secure a $70 million luxury jet for the department. These controversies emerged alongside the allegations surrounding Lewandowski’s conduct.
When questioned about the referral on Thursday, Donald Trump noted he had heard reports of the situation but lacked specific details. He emphasized that he expects honesty from his staff, stating, “I heard something about it, but I don’t know exactly what it is. All I know is I want my people to be honest, and if they’re not going to be honest, they have to be prosecuted.”
Trump further remarked, I will never do anything to stop the prosecution of someone who’s dishonest.
